Song of the Day — Bob Dylan

Once upon a very distant time, Bob Dylan was a skinny young guy with a great sense of humor who snuck fun little gems into albums that were otherwise full of earnest poetry and protest.  Like this one:

Song of the Day — Arlo Guthrie

November 25, 2010

Here is the real story of Thanksgiving — the first Thanksgiving of my life, in fact.  I didn’t hear about these events until eleven years later, though.  Within the span of one epic Norwood family party, my friend David introduced me to this trifecta of popular culture: Alice’s Restaurant, the playing backwards of Beatles songs to listen for hidden messages, and an outrageous new comedy show called Saturday Night Live.

Thanks, David.  You were my friend before Chevy Chase impersonated Gerald Ford, before Paul Was Dead, and even before Arlo Guthrie met Officer Obie.  Cheers, dude.  I’ll meet you on the Group W bench.

Now it all started 45 Thanksgivings ago… (just wait for it to come around on the guitar)

What an excellent, old-fashioned country music band this is!  I had the impression they played rock and roll, but this song, and their cover of Gram Parsons’ famous tune “Wild Horses”, show their true colors.

It is impossible to count the number of times I have listened to this song today.  Oh, fine — maybe some great genius could figure it out.  I’m too tired to try.  I was up most of the night on call, and feel the usual post-call loopiness.  One of the benefits of this weird state of mind is that every once in a while my loopiness resonates with a particular song, which transforms the loopiness into a simple loop.

A simple endless loop.

I play the song over and over.

I “harmonize” first by whistling, then when I’m really gone by singing.  Cover your ears if you happen to be nearby.  Or join in.  It feels like falling in love

with a girl

you know what kind of eyes she’s got.

I would like to see Mme. Chocolate and Fifi make a video to this song.  It’s such fun.
